So you’re suffering workplace stress yourself, or you’re interested in stress impacts on other people. The main cause of this is in relation to being respected or given the right level of responsibility.
This is a very common issue. Perhaps we don’t feel valued, or we feel that we’re not doing what we could do or would like to do, and that makes us feel like we’re not in control of our own life. Or it might be that pay and conditions fall short of our expectations.
It’s important to communicate what you feel with line managers, assertively but respectfully. Mindfulness training helps us build our inner strength, as well as our emotional intelligence and empathy for others, so that challenging interactions become much easier.

How to feel more confident and assertive
One of the key training areas in our mindfulness training is around emotional intelligenc (EI). In essence EI is about being more tuned-in to our own emotional reactions, and also to the sensitivities of others.
In today’s work environment there’s more stress than ever. This puts pressure on inter-personal relationships, and it’s all too easy for managers to expect too much or to be a bit off-hand with their team members. That comes at a price: as an employee we can feel there’s a lack of respect, and also our own stress levels rise. This can lead not just to poor work motivation, but to all kinds of physical and mental ill-health.
30% of us in any year will suffer anxiety to the point of taking time off. A survey by MIND in 2014 showed that almost half of us turn to alcohol after work, and another half had sleep problems. Don’t let this be you.
So how does mindfulness work? It’s very simple. The brain develops neural pathways that equate to habits of response to similar situations. Neuroscience shows us that the brain is plastic. We can change our brains, and change our lives. It just takes regular practice of some really straightforward exercises.
